Flower Photos
While we can only feature a select number of Flower Photos in our What’s Bloomn’ slideshow, it’s already too long most weeks, there are some flower collections too pretty not to share for the interested. The Tropical Grower is expanding Flower Photos to feature some of these collections of beauties.
Amaryllis Blooms
Amaryllis Bulbs are definitely a favorite in Our Garden. These Big Softball-Size flowers sit on top of 3 foot stalks with 4 to 5 flowers each. Most of our Bulbs are Red, but we do have a collection of the pink, white, and red Candy Cane variety.
They usually start sending up blooms stalks at the end of Feb to bloom in March. While we were skeptical the ground planted bulbs would go this year after the Hurricane Ian damage and flooding, they are spectacular. Florida Blue Flag Irises
It’s been an adventure getting the Florida Blue Flag Irises to bloom regularly. It takes heavy feeding and lots of water or a short period of being completely submerged. The thriving plants in our bulb garden started blooming in late February. Since they look different at every angle, and completely different when fully open, we took lots of pics.

Flowers
We like flowers – tropical, wildflower, vegetable, plants. It doesn’t matter. They bring joy to our home. All of these were taken over the last year.
2022
Japanese Lantern Hibiscus, it blooms upside down

Indigenous grass, grows as a weed in our natural buffer, also threw some seeds in one of the front planting beds

Marigold. That’s a baby carrot seedling at the top. 
Morning Glory. Yes it is, Blue My Mind Dwarf Morning Glory. We love blue flowers, although my mother reminds me true blue exists in the sky, not in plants. 
Desert Rose Bloom 
Desert Rose bush, one of our old growth plants. My mom dumped the dirty water from cleaning the fish tank (fish poop and algae) on it for years until it established. The tank is long gone, but the root ball is fantastic. 
I always call this plumbago. It’s not, my mom always reminds me. 
Not plumbago. These cover a whole area in purple. 
Hannah’s Lantana. She calls it the Firecracker plant 
Mom has several orchids putting on a show 
Purple Queen or Purple Heart, the bees love it. We grow it as ground cover. Almost always in bloom 
Bush bean, planted in July 
Dwarf Yellow Ixora in our shell circle. These little shrubs have been blooming since Sept, choking a bit during the flooding, but new flower tuffs all the time. 
Milkweed, the Mexican Butterfly Weed variety, grown carefully, for monarch butterflies. These were still lovely last week. See the next pic.

Variegated Hibiscus 
Mexican Heather. We’ve had this planted in the front walkway for years. It really holds up well to the beating sun and the tiny purple flowers are lovely. 
Tiger Neoregelia Bromeliad. These have kind of a prehistoric feel, like a dinosaur might pass by in the background. While there are no real petals, the bees are all over the little end nubs. 
Cosmos. These grow in a pot, sitting on the brick fountain wall. They bloom like crazy, and seed 10 times as much. While I try to deadhead . . . It’s best they’re contained. 
Spaghetti Squash 
Sweet Potato. This is our first bloom. We have slips (vines) growing along the back fence.

Purple Hong Kong Orchid Tree Bloom. We call this tree the Anniversary Tree.

Scarlet Sage or Red Salvia. My mom keeps saying we don’t have this in garden when she sees the photos. She sees it as more of a red haze in the pots because the flowers are small. I just laugh.

I believe, and it is supposed to be a Streamside Spider Lily. It doesn’t get much water where it is located. Appears to be a white lily.

Miniature Rose. My mom gave me a couple of plants last year for Christmas. Before I was a tropical grower, I grew lovely roses in pots everywhere else. They die here, all but the miniature vine varieties. I grow these as shrubs.
